CITY OF COMMERCE: Comment on proposed environmental projects for Suncor settlement funds

1000money

City of Commerce issued the following announcement on Dec. 16.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) announced a $9 million settlement with Suncor in March for air pollution violations at their Commerce City oil refinery. Over $2.6 million of that amount is reserved for environmental projects that benefit nearby communities. This funding will be distributed by the state through the Supplemental Environmental Projects (SEP) process.

The affected area around the refinery includes southwest Commerce City, parts of Denver, and unincorporated areas of Adams County. Commerce City is participating in the process in hopes of receiving money from the settlement for projects that benefit Commerce City residents. In August, the city collected feedback from residents about your environmental concerns and project suggestions that could improve those conditions.

Using the submitted project suggestions, additional resident comments and city council feedback, we have narrowed the list to two project proposals benefiting residents living near Suncor. Now we want to your feedback on these two projects before submitting our application to CDPHE.

We want the voices of Commerce City residents, especially those near the Suncor refinery, to help determine what types of projects the city proposes. Once the applications are submitted by the end of the year, a state-selected evaluation committee will review the applications and select projects to fund with the $2.6 million from the Suncor settlement.
