The Westy culinary team earned a third-place finish at the Colorado ProStart Student Invitational, held last week at ReelWorks in Denver, according to a Mar. 10 announcement.
The event brought together more than 150 student competitors from over 20 Colorado high schools, all competing for the opportunity to represent their state at the national level. The competition is seen as an important platform for students interested in pursuing careers in the culinary and hospitality industries.
During the contest, proud parents watched as the Westy team prepared a three-course meal from scratch under timed conditions. Their menu featured a Mosaic Salad of melon and feta, Seared Atlantic Salmon with citrus honey butter, and cheesecake with berry compote for dessert. Industry judges—including professional chefs and food industry experts—evaluated teams on creativity, flavor, menu costing, food safety, and teamwork.
In addition to cooking skills, management teams were tasked with presenting comprehensive business plans that included detailed budgets, menu concepts, and restaurant layouts. This aspect of the competition was designed to showcase students’ strategic thinking and readiness for real-world challenges.
After months of preparation, the Westy team’s efforts culminated in their strong third-place showing. Culinary teacher Mr. Gilroy said, “I wouldn’t trade what I have gotten out of these students for anything in the world.”
The result highlights both the dedication of local students and educators as well as growing interest in culinary education programs.
