The Westminster Public Schools (WPS) Board of Education has approved the recommendations from the Forward Together Facilities Initiative (FTFI), setting a course for long-term planning aimed at aligning school facilities, programs, and enrollment across the district.

The decision follows more than a year of study and community engagement. The FTFI was developed in response to ongoing declines in student enrollment due to demographic changes and lower birth rates, trends that have affected districts both locally and nationally.

Under the plan, several changes will take place over a four-year period starting with the 2026-2027 school year. These include relocating Westminster Academy of International Studies to Harris Park to form a PK-6 international program, shifting grade 7 and 8 students to Uplands Discovery Campus PK-8, transitioning Fairview PK-8 and Tennyson Knolls Preparatory School into PK-6 programs with older students attending other schools, closing Mesa PK-5 in 2028-2029 with student transitions determined by a boundary committee, adjusting Sunset Ridge PK-8 into a PK-6 program, and ultimately closing Hidden Lake Secondary School as a site while continuing its educational program at the former Mesa building.

“These recommendations reflect thoughtful, long-term planning,” said Superintendent Dr. Jeni Gotto. “Our goal is to align facilities and enrollment in a way that strengthens academic programming, preserves student opportunity, and ensures sustainability for years to come.”

The board’s action enables WPS to implement these changes gradually. The phased approach is intended to provide clarity for families while supporting staff through structured transition periods.

WPS has emphasized its commitment to keeping families informed throughout the process. Detailed information about upcoming transitions will be provided well before any changes occur, along with support systems designed to help students adjust smoothly.

Additional details on the initiative can be found in the Executive Summary available at www.wps.org/ftfi.
