Art teacher Michelle Music at Westminster High School has launched a creative campaign to address student attendance, according to an April 7 announcement. For the past month, Music has been walking the school halls each morning with handmade signs inspired by internet memes, aiming to motivate students to attend class.
The initiative comes as schools across the country face ongoing challenges with student attendance. Music said her goal is to make students feel welcomed and valued. “Just positive signs that they’re wanted here; that we’re here for them,” Music said.
Music creates new signs daily using scrap cardboard and her own time before classes begin. When asked by students why she puts in so much effort, she responds: “Because you’re worth working so hard for. You’re worth being consistent and showing up for.” The campaign has gained momentum as other teachers at Westminster High School have begun making their own encouraging signs as well.
Music views this grassroots effort as a way of showing care through accountability—a practice inspired by educators who supported her in the past. “I hope that kids know that I love them and I care about them,” she said. Her message remains clear each day: “Get to class!”
