Veterans Community Living Center at Fitzsimons was the second largest nursing facility in Adams County during the first quarter of 2026, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
Records indicate the facility provided 180 beds, which is 54 more than the Adams County average as of the first quarter of 2026, and served an average of 126.8 residents during that timeframe.
The CMS awarded Veterans Community Living Center at Fitzsimons an overall rating of 2 out of 5, which is below the Colorado nursing home average of 3.2.
For that quarter, Skylake Post Acute was the largest nursing home in the county with 242 beds, while Malley Transitional Care Center was third with 162 beds available.
By the first quarter of 2026, Veterans Community Living Center at Fitzsimons had been fined twice, with total penalties amounting to $79,467.
There were 14 for-profit nursing facilities operating in Adams County, Colorado, according to the data.
According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the population of older adults in the U.S. continues to rise as younger populations decrease. From 2020 to 2024, the number of Americans age 65 and up grew by 13%, while the population under 18 decreased by 1.7%. The country’s older adult population has expanded significantly during the past century, going from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.
A 2021 study estimates that almost half of adults in this age group, about 28 million people, could require long-term services and supports, and more than a third might eventually need nursing home care.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
