During the first quarter of 2026, Skylake Post Acute was the largest nursing home in Adams County, data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) shows.

The facility offered 242 beds, which was 116 more than Adams County’s average for nursing homes in that quarter. Its average daily resident count was 180.7.

The CMS assigned Skylake Post Acute an overall rating of 2 out of 5, below the Colorado state average of 3.2 reported for nursing homes.

Veterans Community Living Center at Fitzsimons ranked as Adams County’s second-largest site with 180 beds, while Malley Transitional Care Center ranked third with 162 beds available during the same period.

Skylake Post Acute paid a total of $25,572 in fines and was subject to two penalties as of the end of the first quarter, 2026.

There were 14 for-profit nursing homes operating in Adams County, Colorado overall.

U.S. Census Bureau data indicates that the older adult population in the United States is increasing, while the younger population is declining. Between 2020 and 2024, those 65 and older grew by 13%, and the population under 18 saw a decrease of 1.7%. Over the last century, the nation’s older population has expanded sharply, from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.

According to a 2021 study, close to half of Americans in this age group, or about 28 million, are likely to need long-term services and supports, with over a third projected to require nursing home care at some point.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, said. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
