Defender Lucas Herrington has been named to the Major League Soccer (MLS) Team of the Matchday Starting XI following his performance in Colorado Rapids’ recent match against Portland Timbers. Herrington, 18, scored his first goal for both club and league with a header from a corner kick during Saturday’s game at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park.
Dante Sealy provided the assist in the 53rd minute, delivering a corner into the box that Herrington converted by heading it into the net. This marks Herrington’s first selection to the Team of the Matchday this season.
Head Coach Matt Wells praised Herrington after the game. “His maturity stands out for someone of his age, the way he’s dropped in seamlessly and he’s impressed me so much through preseason,” Wells said. “He’s a wonderful character. He has a good mentality, so he’s got all the tools to improve, and he will improve as a player, because there’s so many elements that he can continue to work on. I like his personality with the ball today.”
Herrington played the full match and made 10 clearances out of the box, helping goalkeeper Zack Steffen achieve his first clean sheet of the season. The defensive lineup also included Jackson Travis, Rob Holding, and Reggie Cannon. Following his efforts, Herrington was voted Man of the Match by fans.
