The Colorado Rapids lost 3-2 to Inter Miami CF at Empower Field at Mile High on April 19, in a match that saw the second-largest crowd in Major League Soccer history with an attendance of 75,824. The game marked the Rapids’ 30th Anniversary Match and celebrated their legacy as one of MLS’ original teams.
The high turnout underscored the significance of the occasion for both the club and its supporters. Despite falling behind early after Lionel Messi converted a penalty in the 18th minute, Colorado maintained possession and created several scoring opportunities throughout the first half. Just before halftime, German Berterame scored for Miami following a cross from Mateo Silvetti, giving Miami a two-goal lead.
After halftime, Colorado responded quickly. In the 58th minute, Rafael Navarro scored his sixth goal of the season by carrying the ball through midfield and finishing past Miami’s defense. Navarro now ranks second in MLS for goals this season and leads all players with ten total goal contributions over his last six appearances.
Five minutes later, defender Lucas Herrington sent a long pass to Darren Yapi who beat goalkeeper Dayne St. Claire to level the score at two apiece. Despite continued pressure from Colorado seeking a winner, Messi scored again for Miami in the 79th minute to secure victory for his team.
Saturday’s match broke Colorado’s previous all-time attendance record of 61,213 set in 2002. The Rapids will continue their schedule with an away game against LAFC on April 22 at BMO Stadium.
