The Colorado Rapids began their 2026 Major League Soccer season with a 2-0 defeat against the Seattle Sounders on Sunday night. The match took place at Lumen Field, where new Rapids Head Coach Matt Wells led his team for the first time in regular season play.
Colorado’s starting lineup included newcomers Hamzat Ojediran, Dante Sealy, and Lucas Herrington. The Rapids faced a strong Seattle side that controlled possession early in the game. Seattle opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Albert Rusnák scored with a header.
Despite continued pressure from Seattle after their goal, they were unable to add to their lead during the remainder of the first half. Colorado’s defense held firm following the early setback, helping to keep the deficit at one goal as halftime approached.
The first half was extended by 12 minutes due to several injuries and video assistant referee (VAR) checks. However, no further goals were scored before halftime, leaving Seattle ahead by one at the break.
Both teams returned from halftime with increased intensity. Play remained largely in midfield, and neither side created many clear chances until Seattle extended their lead. In the 62nd minute, Paul Rothrock scored to make it 2-0 for the home team.
Substitutions from both teams did not alter the scoreline for the rest of the match. The Rapids were unable to find a way back into the contest.
Colorado will now prepare for their home opener against Portland Timbers on Saturday, February 28. The match is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. MT and will be available on Apple TV, Altitude Sports Radio, Tico Sports Spanish Radio, ColoradoRapids.com, and through the Colorado Rapids app.
