The Colorado Rapids lost 2-1 to FC Dallas at home on May 24, in their last match before the FIFA World Cup break.
The match was significant as it marked the final game for both teams until mid-July due to the league’s pause for the international tournament. Both clubs were looking to secure points before the extended break.
FC Dallas opened scoring in the 12th minute with a penalty kick by Logan Farrington. The Rapids responded quickly, equalizing just one minute later when Wayne Frederick set up Georgi Minoungou down the right wing, who then crossed to Paxten Aaronson for a goal in the 13th minute. The club said this was Aaronson’s fourth goal of the season and ninth of his Major League Soccer career. Frederick’s assist marked his fifth of the season and gave him consecutive matches with a goal contribution.
Before halftime, Dallas earned another penalty kick, which Santiago Moreno converted, putting them ahead once again. The second half featured fewer attacking chances as Dallas focused on defense and Colorado struggled to find an equalizer despite creating opportunities in front of goal.
With this result, Colorado remains at five wins, nine losses and one draw for a total of sixteen points in eleventh place in their conference standings. FC Dallas improves its record with seven wins and moves up among Western Conference leaders.
Looking ahead, Major League Soccer will now pause for several weeks during the FIFA World Cup. The Rapids are scheduled to return on July 22 when they host San Diego FC at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park.
