The Colorado Rapids advanced to the semifinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after defeating the San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 in the quarterfinals on May 21. This marks the first time since 1999 that the club has reached this stage of the tournament.
The match, played on a cold night in Colorado, saw both Major League Soccer teams start cautiously as they sought early chances. Goalkeeper Nico Hansen made several saves in the opening half to keep San Jose scoreless. The Rapids initially thought they had taken an early lead through Rafael Navarro, but his goal was overturned by VAR due to an offside call.
Despite this setback, Colorado continued their offensive push and broke through in the 39th minute when Darren Yapi scored with a header from a cross delivered by Dante Sealy following a short corner routine involving Paxten Aaronson and Sealy. This goal was Yapi’s first in U.S. Open Cup play and his fourth across all competitions this season.
Before halftime, Colorado doubled their lead after being awarded a penalty for a handball inside San Jose’s box during stoppage time. Navarro converted from the spot, scoring his first U.S. Open Cup goal and ninth overall for the season.
In the second half, strong defensive performances from Hansen and the back line helped secure a clean sheet for Colorado as they prevented any significant threats from San Jose’s attack.
With this win, Colorado has now reached only its third-ever appearance in an Open Cup semifinal and will host St. Louis CITY SC at home at a date yet to be determined in mid-September. In league play, their next match is scheduled against FC Dallas at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park on Saturday, May 23.
