The Colorado Rapids have named Matt Wells as the club’s new head coach, the organization announced Tuesday. Wells joins the Major League Soccer side after serving as an assistant coach at Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League.
“We are delighted to welcome Matt to the Colorado Rapids as our next head coach,” said Colorado Rapids President Pádraig Smith. “Matt brings extensive Premier League experience, a proven commitment to player development, and a clear tactical identity shaped by his work under some of the modern game’s most respected managers. His background aligns with our long-term vision for the club, and we look forward to the next chapter under his leadership.”
Wells, 37, spent over two seasons on Tottenham’s first-team coaching staff. During this period, he worked with managers including Mauricio Pochettino—now manager of the U.S. Men’s National Team—Ange Postecoglou, and Thomas Frank. Under Postecoglou’s leadership, Wells was Assistant Manager when Tottenham won the 2024-25 Europa League title, their first European trophy since 1984. After a managerial change at Tottenham, Wells remained on staff under Frank during a season that saw the club compete in the UEFA Champions League.
Earlier in his career, from 2015 to 2019, Wells coached various age groups within Tottenham’s academy system—from U18s through U23s—focusing on creating pathways for youth players into senior football.
“I want to thank the ownership at KSE for putting their faith in me to take the club forward,” said Head Coach Matt Wells. “I’m a very ambitious individual who has been surrounded by elite players and managers for the past seven years, and I’m excited to bring my experience and winning mentality to this organization. From the very outset of our discussions, it was clear the club shared my ambitions to create something special and compete for the highest honors. Of course, it’s a difficult decision to leave a team playing Champions League football, but everything about the people and project at Colorado made the choice clear for me. I can’t wait to get to work with this exciting young squad and transmit my footballing idea so that we can deliver a wining brand of football our fans can be proud of.”
Wells also served as Assistant Manager under Scott Parker at Fulham beginning in 2019 before following Parker to AFC Bournemouth (2020–2022) and Club Brugge (part of 2022–23). He contributed to double promotions with Fulham (2020) and Bournemouth (2022), gaining further experience in match preparation and youth development.
Details regarding Wells’ coaching staff will be released later.
