The Colorado Rapids advanced to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals after defeating Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in a penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw at the end of extra time, according to an April 30 announcement.
The match was significant as it marked only the third meeting between the two clubs in what is known as the “I-25 Derby.” The Rapids had previously won both contests against the Switchbacks, with their last encounter taking place in 2016.
Both teams created several scoring opportunities from the start. The Rapids took an early lead in the 25th minute when Rafael Navarro set up Alexis Manyoma for his second goal of the season and first in U.S. Open Cup play. Colorado Springs responded quickly, equalizing through Brennan Creek off a corner kick in the 33rd minute.
The second half remained competitive, but momentum shifted when Kosi Thompson received a red card for Colorado in the 78th minute. Despite being down a player, Colorado continued to press forward and maintain defensive stability, sending the match into extra time after neither side could find another goal during regulation.
In extra time, Georgi Minoungou scored his first goal for Colorado off an assist from Navarro to put them ahead late in the game. However, Switchbacks leveled again with a penalty conversion just before time expired. The outcome was decided by penalties, where Navarro, Rob Holding, Lucas Herrington, Dante Sealy, and Keegan Rosenberry all converted their shots while goalkeeper Nico Hansen made key saves to secure a 5-4 victory for Colorado.
The Rapids will now prepare for their next match against Houston Dynamo FC on Saturday at Shell Energy Stadium.
