The Colorado Rapids announced on March 27 the acquisition of defender Kosi Thompson from Toronto FC in exchange for $200,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money, with the possibility of an additional $200,000 if certain performance-based incentives are met. The agreement also allows Toronto to retain a percentage of any future transfer or trade involving Thompson. He is signed through the 2026 season.
This move is significant as it adds depth and versatility to the Rapids’ defensive lineup ahead of a busy fixture schedule. Thompson, who is 23 years old, brings several years of Major League Soccer experience to Colorado after spending five seasons with Toronto FC and accumulating over one hundred appearances across various competitions.
“We are excited to welcome Kosi to the club,” said Colorado Rapids Sporting Director Fran Taylor. “He’s a young defender with valuable MLS experience who brings solidity, and versatility to our group. Kosi has shown the ability to impact the game on both sides of the ball, and we believe he’s a strong fit for how we want to play.”
Thompson’s career includes two goals and one assist in more than six thousand minutes played for Toronto FC. He also spent time abroad in Norway during 2023 with Lillestrøm SK on loan for part of their Eliteserien season, making several appearances for both their first and second teams. In addition to his main team contributions, he made appearances for Toronto FC II earlier in his career.
“Kosi is a great signing as we look to build a squad that can compete on all fronts with an intense fixture list coming up,” said Rapids Head Coach Matt Wells. “He brings positional versatility and a very high level of defensive aggression. His personality and competitive mentality are exactly what we want here in Colorado. He’s the latest building block in this exciting group.”
Thompson developed through the Toronto FC Academy before advancing into professional soccer via Toronto FC II and then joining their First Team roster.
