Jasmine Warga, a #1 New York Times bestselling author, visited Sherrelwood Elementary Level 5 students on Apr. 7 to share her experiences as a writer and former teacher. Warga is known for books such as “Other Words for Home” and “A Rover’s Story.”

The visit aimed to encourage students by showing how storytelling can empower young people. Warga spoke about her childhood in Cincinnati and her journey from teaching sixth-grade science to writing novels that have been translated into more than 25 languages.

During the session, Warga discussed the importance of storytelling and said she hopes her work helps all kids feel empowered. She introduced her latest middle-grade novel, “The Unlikely Tale of Chase and Finnegan,” which is inspired by animal ambassador programs. The story follows an anxious cheetah cub and a rescue dog, exploring themes of healing and friendship.

Warga explained that even unlikely connections can help people find their way, emphasizing the value of curiosity and observation in both life and writing. She told students that many of her best ideas come from simply watching the world around her.

The visit left Level 5 classes motivated to explore their own voices through writing. Students were encouraged to be curious about their surroundings as they develop their unique stories.
