Adams County sheriff’s deputies shot a 32-year-old man holding a firearm during a search for a stabbing suspect in Commerce City on April 21.

The incident began when deputies responded to a reported stabbing near 70th Avenue and Dexter Street at about 1:04 a.m. The male suspect had fled before law enforcement arrived, leading deputies to set up a perimeter and deploy a K9 unit to track him.

While searching the backyard of a residence in the 6900 block of Dexter Street, deputies announced their presence. According to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, “a 32-year-old male exited the residence holding a firearm.” Deputies gave commands to the man before two officers fired their weapons, striking him. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

A handgun was recovered at the scene. Authorities said it is not yet clear if the man fired his weapon during the encounter. No deputies were injured.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the original stabbing report, while the Adams County Critical Incident Response Team is handling an investigation into the deputy-involved shooting. The involved deputies have been placed on administrative leave as part of standard procedure.
